About Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan UNESCO World Heritage Site

Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves a vast area of steppe and wetlands in central Eurasia. It includes two large protected areas: Naurzum State Nature Reserve and Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve. Geographically, the site spans flat steppe plains and numerous shallow saline and freshwater lakes, which serve as critical stopovers and breeding grounds for migratory birds, particularly for populations of the globally threatened Dalmatian pelican, pink flamingo, and the Siberian crane. The region is distinguished by its unique combination of steppe grasslands and large wetlands situated within the Eurasian Steppe, one of the world's largest continuous grassland ecosystems. Historically, the area has been sparsely inhabited and minimally altered by human activity, allowing for the conservation of undisturbed habitats and traditional nomadic practices. Recreationally, the site attracts eco-tourists, birdwatchers, and researchers due to its rich biodiversity and relatively untouched landscapes. Key landmarks include the Korgalzhyn Lakes, home to vast flocks of flamingos, and the tranquil steppe expanses of the Naurzum Reserve. Visitors can enjoy guided wildlife tours, hiking along designated paths, and photographic expeditions to witness spectacular flocks during migration seasons. The site stands out in preserving the natural heritage of the Eurasian Steppe, highlighting the critical importance of wetlands in this continental region. Overall, Saryarka offers a rare chance to connect with a largely pristine and biologically significant environment, combining steppe and aquatic ecosystem experiences seldom found elsewhere.
